Math Achievements
High standards characterize student performance at Hughes. Math students may participate in Math Club, which earns recognition in local, state, regional, and national competition. During the 2003-2004 school year, Hughes students took 1st place in the Long Beach Chapter MathCounts competition and 25th in the state, 2nd place in American Scholastic Mathematics Association (ASMA) competition, and 5th in the Math Olympiads. Several students placed at various rankings within the top 100 in the Continental Math League, Mathfax, and Sigma competitions.
Music
Hughes choirs are in the top 10% in the entire United States, with ratings of Superior at Southern California Vocal Association festivals for 4 consecutive years. The Hughes Chorale has performed at ...more
Sports
Hughes sports teams enjoy success on a regular basis. The Girl's Track Team is on the way to a sixth consecutive all-city championship, and other Hughes teams typically go to all-city playoffs. They often take all-city championships, and teams are honored for good sportsmanship almost routinely.
