Dear Hughes Families,

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year!  A special welcome to our new Owls who are joining the Hughes family.  We are gearing up for another highly successful year.  The 2016-2017 school year was a great year for Hughes.  We experienced success on many levels.

Our overall SBAC ELA scores increased by 4% and our overall SBAC Math scores increased by 7%.  We beat the district average by 8% and 6%, respectively.  Our CORE Survey data across the board was extremely positive.  Our parents, students, and teachers worked together to develop a school culture that valued each individual, engaged all in learning, and actively supported the success of each individual (Preble and Gordon, 2011, p. 3).

Our athletics program had a year to remember.  Our school finished the year as the best in LBUSD!  Our school won 4 out of 8 championships and we were awarded the Century Club’s Boys’ All Sports Award, Girls’ All Sports Award, and Overall All Sports Award.

As we enter 2017-2018 school year, we are anticipating a continuance of academic and athletic excellence.  Every student who enters our gates is valued member of the Hughes family and we aim to help each one reach his/her potential.  At Hughes it is our goal to prepare our students for high school, college, and beyond.  We are looking forward to another great year!

All the Best,

Edward I. Samuels
