Dear Hughes Families,
I welcome you to the 2012-2013 school year. We pride ourselves knowing that we take your children’s learning seriously by nurturing a safe and respectful environment. We face personnel and budget reductions this year as does the rest of the district but there is no surprise that our children, staff, parents and community have embraced these challenges with determination, perseverance and grace to uphold the high expectations of Charles Evans Hughes Middle School.
As you may already know, the California State Department of Education establishes a goal for all schools based on the STAR tests that we take in the spring. All schools hope to achieve 800 on the Academic Performance Index (API). I am happy to report that Hughes Middle School continues to exceed that target in the majority of our subgroups and overall.
Hughes students learn actively, think creatively, and achieve content standards-based academic goals with the collaboration of our faculty and librarian. This year we are continuing our efforts to build capacity and sustainability to maintain our librarian 100%. Students gain an appreciation for learning as a lifelong process and acquire skills and knowledge necessary to prepare them for becoming members of a diverse and evolving society.
The Hughes faculty and staff invite you to become involved with our school and support the continued success of your children. We have many opportunities for you to be involved at school such as our PTA, ELAC, School Site Council, VIPS, and the Green Team among others. These are all viable groups that influence decision-making on our campus. Our newly formed Guardian Owls provides volunteer parent supervision during lunch, adding to the positive adult presence on campus.
Hughes Middle School welcomes your input and collaboration with our innovative staff to inspire students to achieve goals consistent with their individual talents.
We can’t hide that Owl pride!
Dr. Sally Gregory
