Classroom Syllabus 2016-2017

Welcome to Mr. Michaels’ Seventh Grade English Language Arts Class!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I would like to welcome you and your child to Hughes for their seventh grade year!  I plan to make this year positive and productive. I strive to get to know my students personally so that I may develop a close working relationship that meets their educational and emotional needs.  This year is important academically, in terms of your child’s grades and SBAC scores.  Grade point average and success on the SBAC will help to determine your child’s High School programs and placement.

Communication between home and school is essential to ensure that we are going to provide the best classroom experience for your child.  Each student is required to carry a planner that will contain all of his or her daily assignments in each subject area.  This will provide you and your child with a tool that will inform you of all your child’s homework assignments.  You are encouraged to regularly check Schoolloop for grade and missing assignment updates.

Make-up Work:

  • For each day a student is absent, they have the same number of days to make up that missing assignment for full credit.  They simply need to turn all excused absence work into the “Absent” basket.
  • Students may make make up missing work for partial credit.  They simply need to place it in the “Late Work” basket.  This late work must be completed one week before the end of the grading period.

Behavior Issues:

  • The purpose of behavior accountability is to give all students the opportunity to learn in a distraction free environment.
  • I have a 3 step process for behavior issues.  These are for Level 1 offenses
  1. Verbal Warning
  2. Name of Board
  3. Name with a Check = Phone Call Home and After School Detention.
  4. Detentions will be served the day following the infraction so parents have time to be notified.  This detention will be from 3:45- 4:15 pm Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
  • Ongoing behavior issues, or Level 2 or 3 Infractions will be passed on to Administration for additional consequences via a written referral to the office.

I am confident that with our combined efforts, this year will be a successful and enjoyable experience for everyone.  I am looking forward to meeting each of you at Back-to-School Night.  If you need to contact me, I can be reached by e-mail: dmichaels@lbschools.net.

Sincerely,

David Michaels
