AVID HS Application (DOC)

Advancement Via Individual Determination Program (AVID)

AVID High School Application

If you're 8th grader is interested in applying to AVID for high school, please complete the application and return to Ms. Collins or Ms. Hoang 3/24.  Once your child has returned an application they will be interviewed by a high school AVID student to determine eligibility.  Interviews will be held on 3/26 at Hughes.  You can find the application under the resource section of the AVID website.

Elective Selection

AVID applications and interviews will be available after CST testing. To be apart of the AVID program, students should turn in their elective cards to myself (room 406) or Ms. Hoang (room B-1) this week to show their interest. In May, we will give an application and set up an interview for students who are interested in AVID and have turned in their elective cards to us. Students who have average to above average grades, satisfactory conduct, and show a desire to go to college and develop their leadership skills will be chosen for the program. Students will be notified in May if they are selected to be in AVID. If students are not selected, they will be given a different elective for next year.

Mission Statement

AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

What is AVID?

AVID is an elective class and program for grades 6-12 designed to target and enroll students from the academic middle into a school’s most rigorous courses. Students receive support in the AVID elective class through tutoring and a proven curriculum based on writing, inquiry, collaboration and reading (WICR).

AVID students will have the opportunity to explore career interests and college expectations, requirements, areas of study and financial aid.  AVID classes will also be exposed to high school choices in the 8th grade.

Is your student AVID bound?

AVID is an academic elective for which “determined” 6th – 12th graders must apply, interview and be admitted before enrolling.  The program is for students who have the “individual determination” to attend college, and…

  • behave appropriately in class,
  • attend school on a regular basis, possess a 2.0 – 3.5 grade point average,
  • will enroll in accelerated classes in middle school and high school,
  • will work hard to meet academic goals, and
  • will actively participate in AVID events.

I hope you are enjoying the Holiday Vacation.  Upon the student's return to school, both AVID classes will be participating in a Sock Drive.  We are looking for new socks for men, women, children and babies.  The socks will be used within the Long Beach homeless community.  The drive will last between January 5 - January 23.  Please bring your new socks in room 403 or 406.  Thank you for supporting our community service project! Our goal is 100 pairs of socks!
