8th Grade Activities

Students will be held accountable for conduct with a 10 Point Demerit System. The point system begins on March 4, 2019. Students will begin with 0 points. Students who enroll after the 3rd quarter will begin with 3 points. They will receive points for committing infractions as follow:

    Off-campus Suspension                         = 3 Points

    On-campus Suspension (full day)         = 2 Points

    On-Campus Suspension (partial day)   = 1 Point

    Referral (Level 3 Infraction)                   = 1 Point

    Unserved Detentions                             = 1 point


The following are the consequences and loss of privileges for receiving Demerit Points.


    1-2 points =  Warning

       3 points = Parent Conference

       4 points  = Warning

       5 points = Loss of Privilege - Activities Night @ CSULB

       6 points  = Warning

       7 points = Loss of Privilege - Hughes Gavel Picnic

    8-9 points   = Warning 

     10 points  = Loss of Privilege - Promotional Ceremony

Activities Night 2019 @ CSULB!

Date: Friday, June 7, 2019
Time: 5:30pm - 8:30pm 

Check-in: 5:30pm, Lower Level Entrance
Location: CSULB Student Union 

Ticket: $10.00

Tickets will not be sold at the door. Tickets will be available for purchase after June 1st from the Banker.

Students are allowed to attend in free dress attire. However, students will still need to follow LBUSD Dress Code Guidelines. Students who arrive dressed inappropriately will not be allowed to enter.

Activities include: dancing, bowling, pool tables, and arcade games. The activity night is for Hughes 8th graders only. Food and drinks will be provided by the PTA. Students must be picked up at CSULB's Student Union no later than 8:15pm.

8th Grade Awards Night

Date: Monday, June 10, 2019
Time: 5:30pm - 7:00pm
Location: Hughes Auditorium

Our faculty and staff will be recognizing 8th grade students who have distinguished themselves in academics, service and leadership. Invitations will be mailed to parents of honorees. This is a free dress event, but we are inviting all students to dress nicely for this special event. Honorees must arrive  and be seated by 5:45pm.  Light refreshments will be served.

8th Grade Awards Assembly

Date: Wednesday, June 12, 2019
Time: 9:15am to 10:15am 
Location: Hughes Auditorium

We will be recognizing our 8th grade students who have received awards from individual teachers. We will also recognize our top students who have earned High Honors (3.50 - 3.99) or made it to the Principal's Honor Roll (4.0) on the 2nd semester report card. Invitations will sent home with students.

8th Grade Gavel Day Picnic

Date: Wednesday, June 12, 2019
Time: 1:03pm to 3:20pm 
Location: Hughes Athletic Field 

Our 8th grade Gavel Day Picnic will be held immediately after the Promotion rehearsal. Only 8th grade students are invited to attend. Students are expected to bring their own meals. Box lunches may be ordered in advance from the cafeteria for free or reduced lunch students. Parents are welcome to drop off food for their student starting at 1:00 pm at the Bixby gate. Please bag and label your students food.  All food deliveries will be checked by teachers at the drop-off station. Drinks will be provided by the PTA.

This is a free dress event. However, students are still expected to follow LBUSD Dress Code Guidelines. Students who arrive to school dressed inappropriately will be excluded from the picnic. Hats will be allowed during the picnic only.

Students may bring small blue-tooth speakers, beach towels, and / or  blankets to this event. Items will not be stored in the office.

We will have a DJ at the picnic for your enjoyment.

Lastly, The school yearbook, The Gavel Yearbook will be available for purchase during the picnic.

      Promotion Ceremony 2019

Promotional Ceremony:  

Thursday, June 13, 2019 ~ 9:30am – 11:00am

Students check-in at 8:30am

8th graders released to home after the ceremony.

Students will be seated in assigned seats according to their 1st period classes. At the conclusion of the ceremony, students will be dismissed to pick up their promotional certificates. Report cards will be mailed home. Students with outstanding fines will not receive their promotional certificates or report cards until fines are cleared.

Student dress should reflect the seriousness and formality of the event.

Acceptable promotion attire includes the following:

  • Dress or skirt of appropriate length
  • Dressy pants outfit
  • Modest tops
  • Flat shoes or wedge heels
  • Dress shirts / or button down
  • Dress pants
  • Suit jacket (nice but optional)
  • Vests
  • Spaghetti strap or strapless dresses may only be worn with a jacket or cover.

Unacceptable promotion attire includes the following:

  • Formal or club type dresses
  • Tank tops, halters, or bare midriff
  • Shorts, t-shirts, or athletic clothing
